Emancipation Day

August 1st, 1985: Trinidad and Tobago is the first country in the world to declare a national holiday to commemorate the abolition of slavery. This National public holiday replaced Columbus Discovery Day, which commemorated the arrival of Christopher Columbus at Moruga on 31st July 1498. 

This is my experience of growing up in Trinidad and Tobago. Two islands. One country.
