For many local manufacturers, sustainable fashion is not just a label but a business practice. In the city of Sault Ste. Marie, on the St. Marys River, just north of the U.S. border, 49th Apparel crafts high quality, built to last clothing to be worn, loved and wear better with age. Every garment is made from start to finish in their downtown studio by a small team of local seamstresses.
In a small studio space in his hometown, Daryl Wier started out experimenting with old Hudson’s Bay blankets, collecting vintage clothing and textiles. Drawn to their quality, craftsmanship and history, he continued deconstructing men's suitings, silk ties and shirts.
With his first request for a high-quality classic nightshirt, the company found its’ niche. Upcycling, and giving new life to vintage garments continues to inspire the sleepwear and womenswear in the RE-MADE collection, combining new fabrics with men’s vintage shirts to produce nightshirts, sleep shorts and one-of-a-kind dresses and tunics.
